Jada Pinkett Smith's parents would be high on cocaine in front of her when she was a child.
The actress - who has son Jaden, 15, and daughter Willow, 12, with her husband Will Smith - shocked the showbiz world last week when she admitted she had battled "many addictions, of several kinds" in her past.
Her former stepfather, lawyer Warren A. Brown, has now confessed to regularly using cocaine with her mother Adrienne Banfield Jones in the house when Jada was growing up in the late 70s and early 80s.
He told Celebuzz: "At times I felt guilty. I remember just the three of us in the house together and I knew I was high and so was her mother.
"She didn't know though, she was too young to recognise it. She didn't see us doing anything. But I felt really bad because I thought this little girl deserves better than her parents addicted."
Warren fears Jada, now 42, may have suffered in the aftermath of his divorce from Adrienne in 1986 since he deliberately distanced himself from her.
He reminisced: "It was me and Jada: I was raising her while her mother was working and in college. We spent a lot of time together ... My new wife asked that I distance myself from her.
"So it was a sudden departure for Jada, and it was always just the two of us. Anyone who knew of our relationship would not disagree that my estrangement with her may have played a part."
Jada opened up about her past demons for the first time in a post on her Facebook page to celebrate her birthday on September 18.
She wrote: "I had many addictions, of several kinds, to deal with my life issues, but today, at 42, I have my wisdom, my heart and my conscience as the only tools to overcome life's inevitable obstacles. I have become a good problem solver with those tools, and I am damn proud."
