The 'Heart of Dixie' actress was outside of her vehicle in Beverly Hills when a man allegedly jumped from his skateboard on top of the Mercedes-Benz and then onto the rear windscreen, which broke and showered four-year-old James Knight with debris.

A friend of the 38-year-old star - who also has two-year-old Leo Thames with husband Kyle Newman - was also inside the car but came out of the parked vehicle in order to protect the little boy.

When she confronted the man, he threw a can at her, which hit her on the arm.

A statement from the Beverly Hills Police Department explained: "[James] was secured in a child car seat positioned in the back seat of the vehicle as the suspect jumped on the rear windshield causing glass to shatter and strike the child.

"In an effort to protect the child, the female driver exited the vehicle and confronted the suspect at which time he threw a can at her, striking her arm."

The suspect, who has been named as 47-year-old Paul Francis Floyd, is also said to have attacked another vehicle, which had a male driver, by kicking it.

Police quickly arrived on the scene and the man was arrested for felony child endangerment, misdemeanour battery and two counts of felony vandalism.

Officers had received multiple 911 calls to report the man for lashing out at passing cars and throwing cans at people.

Paparazzi photographers caught much of the aftermath of the incident, including the damage to the car and Jaime speaking with police.

Floyd is currently being held on $100,000 bail and is scheduled to appear at the Airport Courthouse on Friday (06.04.18).

A spokesperson for the model-and-actress declined to comment.
