The two-time Academy Award-winning actress has admitted to being the happiest she can ever remember at the age of 79, and Jane credits her contentment to her approach to life.

Jane shared: "Right now, I'm about as happy as I've ever been. And I've worked hard to get here, and I've worked hard to stay healthy."

The 'Our Souls at Night' star said that in order to extract the most from life, it is important to live with a clear purpose in mind.

And according to Jane, that's the reason she feels so happy at this stage of her own life.

Speaking to 'Entertainment Tonight', she explained: "I think it's important to live life with intention because otherwise you're just sort of at the mercy of fate.

"I mean, we all are to some extent. But I don't know, I just try and take it by the balls and make it my own life I'm talking about."

Despite this, the Hollywood icon admitted finding happiness has been a long-term challenge for her.

Jane revealed: "I wasn't always somebody that I liked very much, and I spent a lot of time trying to become a better, happier ... I come from a long line of depressed people, so it takes some work to get over that."

Jane said physical health and having good friends have been instrumental to her upbeat outlook.

She reflected: "I lead a healthy life. I try to hang with people who have good attitudes because you know who you spend time with matters too."

This comes shortly after Jane recently said that sex gets better with age.

The actress claimed her new Netflix series 'Grace and Frankie' gives a "cultural face to older women" and she insisted that getting intimate is much better when you are older.

Speaking about her character on the show, Jane said: "I've had three lovers already in that series. I'm just so happy we're giving a cultural face to older women.

"[Sex is better] because, first of all, we're braver - what the heck to we have to lose? So my skin sags - so does his."
