The singer's parents are from the Caribbean island, and while she is currently in Las Vegas for her residency, she is worrying about family who she is yet to hear from in the wake of the natural disaster.

Speaking in an Instagram video, she said: "What's on my mind is what's going on in Puerto Rico. The devastation is beyond belief... Me and my cousin still haven't been able to hear from our families over there."

The star - who has helped fund medical facilities in Puerto through her Lopez Family Foundation - asked her fans to donate and "help rebuild" the island.

She continued: "Today, Puerto Rico needs our help. I urge you to support and donate to the efforts of the First Lady of Puerto Rico, Beatriz Areizaga... Together we can help rebuild our island, and the Caribbean."

Her comments come after Melissa Joan Hart paid tribute to those affected by Hurricane Maria and the recent earthquake in Mexico following criticism from fans.

In a since deleted Instagram post, the actress wrote: "And just like that, our family vacation is canceled... Such a bummer but we plan to hit the @nickresortpuntacana resort another time this year."

Although many fans felt sorry for Melissa and the way her trip had gone, others suggested she could have shown more compassion for those impacted by the devastating scenes.

Melissa is yet to respond to the criticism over her original controversial post, despite deleting it from her page.

However, she has since posted a tribute to those affected by the hurricane, as well as the recent earthquake in Mexico.

She wrote: "My thoughts are with all my friends in Puerto Rico and the surrounding islands that are being hit by #hurricaneMaria today."
