The 45-year-old actor stars as physicist and mathematician Ian Donnelly opposite linguistics professor Amy Adams in the sci-fi adventure as they try to make first contact with extraterrestrials who land on earth, and he was left "emotionally wrecked" when he saw the finished movie for the first time.

He said: "It emotionally wrecked me. I don't know if I'll watch it again."

The actor was in awe of what the finished movie looked like as most of the film was himself and his co-star inside the aliens' spaceships.

He said: "I didn't think it would look as big and expansive as it does.

"We're in a black box! With a white screen and [wearing] a Hazmat suit. That felt like it for the bulk of the movie.

"Not to take the sexiness out of filmmaking, but filmmaking usually isn't very sexy."

Jeremy is fascinated by science-fiction and would love to return to the genre again in the future, so long as there is something he can "connect" with.

He told the Independent: "I like to call it science non-fiction.

"There's a certain reality and plausibility to stuff like this, that makes sense to me. I love that. Yeah, I like this genre, sure. If it's based in human emotion, and the themes are great, it's something I can connect to because I still play a human being. That's all that matters to me."

The 'Avengers' star admitted he likes to cause "problems" with his performances.

He said: "For me, I like to give directors problems.

"Like good problems in an editing room! I want to give them choices - 'Oh, that's a good idea and so is that!' That's my challenge. I want to give the director many problems."
