Justin Theroux bought Jennifer Aniston a piñata for her birthday last month - but he didn't put any sweets in it because she doesn't eat candy.

The 'Leftovers' star treated his lovely wife to a trip away in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with their close friends Courteney Cox and Johnny McDaid at the beginning of February for the blonde beauty's 48th birthday, which fell on February 11, and rather than get her a lavish gift, he took her out for a meal and had a papier-mâché game brought in.

Speaking to E! News, he said: "It's a great spot because it's close to L.A. You can dip over there and dip back. We do special things.

"I did a little night for her birthday where we went to a special dinner and had a piñata. Actually, we didn't put anything in the piñata. We had a piñata and didn't end up smashing it. What are you going to put in it? Kale? She doesn't eat candy!"

And it wasn't just Justin who wanted to make sure Jennifer had the best birthday as her ex-husband Brad Pitt - who she divorced in 2005 - sent her birthday wishes via text.

A source said recently: "They started talking once he wished her a happy birthday."

Jennifer also offered Brad, 53, some words of comfort regarding his high-profile split from Angelina Jolie - who he began a relationship with after his separation and subsequent divorce from the former 'Friends' star after almost five years of marriage.

An insider explained: "Brad has confided in Jen. Brad told her he's having a hard time with his split and they exchanged a few texts reminiscing about the past."

Despite the random messages, Justin reportedly has no issue with her being back in touch with Brad and appreciates they have history together.

The source added: " Justin is OK with them being friends. Jen just wants to be nice."
