The 31-year-old singer recently became the most followed Twitter user in history, reaching 91.9 million followers on the social media website.

Katy realizes that having the "power" to directly communicate with so many people means she has to be responsible with it.

Speaking to Mashable, the pop superstar said: "I think everyone feels a little on edge saying anything. Sometimes you feel like you have to read all the news before you can say anything ... I feel like I have the power with one button to speak with so many people and be connected with people all over the world at the snap of your finger. It's a powerful tool ... But when you have a lot to lose you get a bit careful because the bigger you are the harder you fall. So you just kind of have to learn how to bob and weave. I think the whole world has become a little on edge over what you can and cannot say. And it's not just me, it's anyone."

The 'Roar' singer - who is in a relationship with nudist sunbather Orlando Bloom and was previously married to Russell Brand - makes a concentrated effort to use social media in a positive way and use her fame for a greater good.

Katy recently paired up with Staples to donate $1 million to DonorsChoose, a charity which aims to fund projects in the classroom to help both teachers and children.

She said: "I have a lot of spotlight, and that's why I do things like this. I just need to refocus the spotlight on things that need it. DonorsChoose is kind of like Kickstarter for teachers. The education system in America is not brilliant, and hopefully that will change soon. But right now we don't put enough importance into it, and a lot of teachers are having to dip into their own pockets. It's just one of things where you assume people's needs are already met but when you look at it there's such a big hole. Education is so important for kids, especially in those formative years."
