The Oscar-winning actor appears as a Catholic priest in Martin Scorsese's new movie, and has revealed he made a conscious effort to shed weight for his latest on-screen role.

Liam told ITV's 'Lorraine': "I dropped a bit, but (co-star) Adam Driver, he's about my size - he's about six foot three. He dropped like 51 pounds. He got dangerously thin.

"I dropped about 16 or 17. Martin wanted us all to look a bit more gaunt, a bit more haggard."

Liam also claimed that the experience caused him to become more "spiritual".

He shared: "When you go on a diet it focuses the mind and you tend to get a bit more spiritual."

Liam said, too, that he was thrilled to be reunited with Scorsese, having previously worked with the director on 'Gangs Of New York'.

He explained: "We've worked together before on Gangs Of New York so we kind of knew each other."

Meanwhile, Liam said recently that another of his films, 'A Monster Calls', is sure to teach moviewatchers a few "life lessons".

The acclaimed actor voices the 'monster' - a giant humanoid yew tree - in the upcoming film, and he thinks the saga is more than just a children's film.

He said: "The monster is there to try and teach life lessons, to imbue the idea that nothing is ever as it seems.

"And, of course, the overriding element in this story is that this boy is going to have to cope with the death of the greatest love he'll ever have in his life, which is his mother [who has a terminal illness].

"It certainly isn't just a children's film. There's life lessons in it for all of us."
