The 57-year-old singer credited the late star - who died of cancer on Sunday (10.01.16) with inspiring her career and performed his 1974 track 'Rebel Rebel' for the audience at Houston's Toyota Arena in Texas.

She told the audience: "I want to pay tribute to a man who inspired my career.

"If you haven't heard of David Bowie, look him up motherf*****rs.

"He was one of the geniuses in the music industry, one of the greatest singer-songwriters of the 20th century and he changed my life when I went to see him in concert in Detroit. He showed me that it was OK to be different. And he's the first 'rebel heart' that I laid eyes on."

Following the shock news of Bowie's passing, Madonna - who inducted the 'Absolute Beginners' singer into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996 - paid tribute to her hero on social media.

She wrote: "I'm Devastated! This great Artist changed my life! First concert i ever saw in Detroit! R.IP. #rebelheart

"Talented . Unique. Genius. Game Changer. The Man who Fell to Earth. Your Spirit Lives on Forever! #rebelheart

"So lucky to have met you!!!! Hot Tramp I love you So! #rebelheart (sic)."
