The talent show's host is regularly left red-faced when wannabe stars try their luck by mocking his doomed relationship with the 'Hero' hitmaker but he has admitted, although he's not to blame for the tongue-in-cheek jibes, he often finds himself in the firing line of his former love.

Speaking to 'Entertainment Tonight', Nick explained: "Sometimes you do [have to give her a heads up], man, and she thinks I'm the one that put people up to that stuff. I get myself in enough trouble!

"But she has fun with it too. She knows that, you know, there's no hard feelings and it's all love so when people joke and I make jokes, it's just all in jest."

The estranged couple - who have five-year-old twins Moroccan and Monroe together - ended their seven-year marriage last year and Mariah has since got engaged to her new fiancé Australian billionaire, James Packer.

Nick has also moved on from the split and is now dating TLC's Rozonda 'Chilli' Thomas but recently insisted Mariah, 46, will always be the love of his life.

He said: "It's one of those things, I'm a hopeless romantic too. Through this learning process, you never say never. To me one thing I know, that will always be the love of my life, always be my family and that's never going to change.

"It's extremely disappointing when you see that people just want to perpetuate negativity when there is no negativity even involved."
