Matthew McConaughey "became a man" after the death of his beloved father Jim when he was 22 years old.

The 'Interstellar' actor lost his beloved dad Jim in 1992 and says the tragedy had a profound effect on him.

Matthew McConaughey "became a man" after the death of his father.

Writing about one of 10 moments that helped shape the man he is today, he said: "A boy loses his father, he quickly becomes a man, I was 22. I remember clearly the sobriety I felt in the pain of my father passing. The sorrow refined me, and I never looked at the world the same again."

Elsewhere in the article, the 45-year-old hunk - who has children Levi, six, Vida, four, and Livingston, two, with wife Camila Alves - recalled his misguided decision to swap his trusty truck for a sports car when he was in high school - and quickly found the flashy motor "changed" his personality.

Matthew McConaughey -  I became really concerned with my appearance, meticulous, self-conscious.

Titling the experience 'The Curse of the Red Sports Car', he wrote for People magazine: "My truck was informal, rugged, social, like me. But this 300ZX [sports car] was my dream car, or so I thought. And as soon as I got it, something changed. I started acting like my car. I became really concerned with my appearance, meticulous, self-conscious."

Just two months later, the 'Magic Mike' star sold the sports car and got his truck back and claimed he quickly returned to his usual self.
