The 'Wrecking Ball' hitmaker - who was previously engaged to Liam Hemsworth and dated Patrick Schwarzenegger - recently admitted she dates both men and women but has encountered problems when romancing people of both genders.

Explaining why she dislikes "overly macho energy", she said: "That made me feel like I had to be a femme-bot, which I'm not.

"And then when I was with a girl, I felt like, 'Oh s**t, she's going to need someone to protect her, so I'm going to need to have this macho energy.' "

Though Miley finds it easy to meet people she can have sex with, she struggles to make a meaningful connection.

She said: "F***ing is easy. You can find someone to f**k in five seconds. We want to find someone we can talk to. And be ourselves with. That's fairly slim pickings."

The 22-year-old singer recalled how she broke down in tears when her male date took her to a restaurant last Valentine's Day (14.02.15) and she caught a glimpse of a future she knew she didn't want for herself.

She told TIME magazine: "All the women in the restaurant were with these older, fat men that had just let themselves go. They were just being drunk b*****ds. And then the women were sitting there, trying so hard just to look good. And they're ignoring them the whole time.

" And I thought, 'I'm not living like this. If I end up in a straight relationship, that's fine -- but I'm not going to be with f***ing slob guys who are watching porn, making all their girls feel ugly."

Miley believes she is so "open" with her sexuality because of her parents, Billy Ray and Tish Cyrus.

She explained: "I don't associate men and protection necessarily," Cyrus says. "I think that's what's given me the openness of sexuality. Not that my dad wasn't an awesome protector, but I trust my mom to save me. She's the prince. I never had that fairy tale."
