Jesse Helt accompanied the singer to the star-studded ceremony which was held at The Forum in Inglewood, California, as Miley wanted to highlight the huge problem with homelessness across the US.

At the end of the night, Miley gave Jesse the 'Moon Man' trophy she was awarded for Video of the Year for 'Wrecking Ball' - which he collected with her - as a memento but now Jesse has decided he needs the money more than the memory and has listed the item on the internet auction site.

The description for the item reads: "In mint condition. Very rare one of a kind. No fingerprints."

The statuette is also engraved with both of their names.

The trophy has a 'Buy It Now' price of $15,000 and the starting bid is set at $10,000.

Since his appearance at the VMAs, Jesse has endured a number of problems.

Even his attendance at the show was a probation violation, stemming from 2010 charges of criminal mischief and trespassing, and he was sentenced to six months in jail.

When he accepted the prize, Jesse used the huge television audience to make a plea for more to be done to help those individuals living on the streets across America.

He said: "I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I am one of these people. I survived in shelters all over the city. I've cleaned your hotel rooms, I've been an extra in your movies, I've been an extra in your life. Though I may have been invisible to you on the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight."
