The 'Wrecking Ball' hitmaker has teamed up with Instagram to promote awareness and acceptance of people who are transgender, genderqueer and gender non-conforming.

In an interview with TIME magazine about the project, she said: "People like Leelah [who committed suicide after it was believed her parents sent her to 'conversion therapy' after she told them she wanted to become a woman] are not living their lives because people are telling them what to be. And there are women miles away from me right now that are only allowed to show this much of their eyes.

"I can stand on a stage with my t**s out. It's so unfair that I'm allowed to be like this and there are two men that can't get married in f***ing Nashville right now."

Happy Hippie, a non-profit company which Miley launched earlier this year, aims to help the homeless and LGBT youth.

The news of the campaign comes days after Miley revealed she is "open" with her sexuality.

She said: "I am literally open to every single thing that is consenting and doesn't involve an animal and everyone is of age.

"Everything that's legal, I'm down with. Yo, I'm down with any adult - anyone over the age of 18 who is down to love me. I don't relate to being boy or girl, and I don't have to have my partner relate to boy or girl."
