Pierce Brosnan

Pierce Brosnan funded his big break in acting by taking out a second mortgage on his central heating.

The 61-year-old star has revealed his late wife Cassandra Harris - who died from ovarian cancer aged 43 in 1991 - encouraged him to move to Los Angeles with her so that he could try to make it big in the movie industry, and the change paid off.

He said: "It was my late wife, God bless her, who said we should go to America, and somehow we took out a second mortgage on the central heating, and we went to Los Angeles on a wing and a prayer."

The former James Bond actor - who has appeared in 'Mrs. Doubtfire', 'Mars Attacks!' and 'Mamma Mia!' - landed his breakthrough role in US TV series 'Remington Steele' in 1982 and admits he based his acting style on Cary Grant by carefully studying the late Hollywood legend's movies.

He added to Loaded magazine: "The first audition I went on was for 'Remington Steele', and I got the job. And I had no idea what to do.

"Bob Butler was the director, and he said, 'It's an old movie.' So I looked at Cary Grant movies and tried to be Cary Grant."
