Prince William in Oxford

Britain's Prince William is "thrilled" his wife Duchess Catherine is pregnant.

The 32-year-old royal was greeted with huge cheers from a big crowd in Oxford today (08.09.14) following the couple's announcement this morning that the Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their second child, but he admitted it has been a "tricky" last week because of her severe morning sickness.

Speaking at Oxford University today, where he was opening a Chinese studies building, he added: "It's been a tricky few days - week or so - but obviously we're basically thrilled, it's great news, and early days.

"We're hoping things settle down and she feels a bit better."

William - who has 13-month-old son Prince George with Catherine - was greeted by several members of the public who were keen to congratulate him on the news.

He was given a bouquet of flowers by two-year-old Isabella Rawlings and when she handed them over he replied: "Thanks. Are they for Kate?"

William was in good spirits as he met several members of the public including 27-year-old Erica Payne and her 12-week-old daughter.

Speaking about the little one, he told Erica: "They're good when they stay like that - quiet."

Kensington Palace confirmed the duchess was pregnant earlier this morning and also revealed she was unable to travel to Oxford with William because she is suffering from severe morning sickness, as the 32-year-old royal did while she was pregnant with George.

The statement read: "Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting their second child.

"The Queen and members of both families are delighted with the news.

"As with her first pregnancy, The Duchess is suffering from Hyperemesis Gravidarum.

"Her Royal Highness will no longer accompany The Duke of Cambridge on their planned engagement in Oxford today.

"The Duchess of Cambridge is being treated by doctors at Kensington Palace."

The news also means William's brother Harry will be fifth in line to the throne, behind his father Prince Charles, William, George and the newborn, when Catherine gives birth to his niece or nephew.
