The 58-year-old actress - who is married to Tom Hanks - underwent a double mastectomy and breast reconstruction in April after being diagnosed with the disease but says she is now in recovery.

Speaking as she walked the red carpet at the 2015 Tony Awards at New York's Radio City Music Hall, she told E! News: "I feel great. When you do Broadway, you have a family there and one at home as well. I had so much love through the process. I'm very thankful."

Rita - who resumed her role in stage production 'Fish in the Dark' in May - was accompanied to the ceremony by her son Colin and was very excited to be at the show, which honoured the best in theatre.

She tweeted: ".@ColinHanks, my son, and I @TheTonyAwards. Just sat down! Great seats!(sic)"

The 'Girls' star previously admitted she made the decision to go public with her illness to encourage other women to get checked for breast cancer because "early diagnosis" is key when it comes to beating the disease.

She said: "I feel blessed to have a loving, supportive husband, family, friends and doctors and that I am the beneficiary of advances in the field of breast cancer and reconstruction. I am getting better every day and look forward to renewed health.

"I hope this will encourage others to get a second opinion and to trust their instincts if something doesn't 'feel' right."
