The two men worked together on the 1995 drama 'Restoration' but Hugh recently claimed the 'Iron Man' star "hated" him.

Robert, 52, responded on Twitter: "A lot has happened over two decades! I respect how Mr. Grant has matured as an artist & voice against violations of privacy. Let's break bread together soon @HackedOffHugh! #burythehatchet2018"

The 'Love Actually' star replied: "Thanks, @RobertDowneyJr. Nice way to kick off the year. And yes- if you're in London come by and break bread. Won't be easy as my 5 year old bakes it, but you seem strong. Respect. #burythehatchet2018 (sic)"

Hugh, 57, recently recalled to People magazine how Robert took an instant dislike from the moment they first went on set together.

The 'Paddington 2' star claimed: "He hated me. He took one look at me and wanted to kill me."

Hugh has four children, two with Tinglan Hong, a former receptionist at a Chinese restaurant in London and two with Swedish television producer Anna Eberstein, including five-year-old son John. Anna is currently pregnant with his fifth child.

Robert also has a five-year-old son, Exton, among his three children.

Meanwhile, Hugh also revealed he thinks 'Bridget Jones' Diary' actress Renee Zellweger is equally "nutty", but they get on very well.

He said: "Renee loves me and I love Renee. Well, I mean she's in the same category as Emma Thompson, in terms of lunacy, but an amazing actress of course, and very generous."

However, the 48-year-old actress almost got him into trouble when she sent a saucy gift.

He recalled: "She once sent me a fabulous huge volume of beautiful photography, including a lot of semi-undressed women. I remember it because I had just landed in Marrakesh ... and the book was impounded."
