The 60-year-old comic agreed one of the "biggest-ever" vehicle deals in the UK by parting with his 240mph McLaren F1 sports car - which was rebuilt in 2011 after a crash - for the huge sum, making a staggering £7.3 million profit on the £640,000 he paid for the vehicle in 1997.

Specialist car dealer David Clark, who originally sold Rowan rare vehicle, told The Sun newspaper: "Everyone is very pleased with the sale.

"There was interest from around the world and it has gone to a British buyer who will drive it like Rowan did.

"It is one of the biggest ever deals in the UK. Rowan is pleased, but also maybe a bit sad as he did 40,000 miles in it."

The 'Love Actually' star decided to list his car for sale at the beginning of the year because he felt it was time for someone else to "enjoy" the vehicle.

He previously said: "It's time for it to be enjoyed by someone else. I bought it for the quality of the thinking that went into its design, and now it has become a thing of value, it is time for it to be enjoyed by someone else."

Rowan crashed the car into the back of another vehicle in 1999 and two years later, lost control on a slippery bend and hit a tree, destroying most of the vehicle.

He subsequently received what is thought to be Britain's highest ever single car insurance payout, with the vehicle costing £900,000 to be rebuilt by McLaren.

It also put up his annual insurance to around £60,000.

McLaren are known to have only had 64 of this particular model made for the road.
