Shakira will perform at the World Cup closing ceremony, the third consecutive tournament she has been asked.

The singer has an 18-month-old son Milan with soccer star Gerard Pique is "thrilled" to be performing 'La La La (Brazil 2014)' at the Maracana stadium in Rio de Janeiro on 13 July ahead of the final game in the prestigious soccer tournament.

She said in a statement: "I have an intricate relationship with football for obvious reasons, and I truly understand what the World Cup means to so many people, myself included.

"The fans have shown the most incredible support for this song and I can't wait to perform it for them."

Shakira will be joined at this year's closing ceremony by Carlos Santana and Wyclef Jean, who will sing the official anthem 'Dar Um Jeito' alongside Brazil's Alexandre Pires, and local superstar Ivete Sangalo, who will perform a medley of well-known Brazilian songs, while there will be a Samba performance by students from a local school.

The performance will mark the 37-year-old beauty's third consecutive appearance at a World Cup closing ceremony, having performed in South Africa in 2010 and in Germany in 2006.

She also performed the official song for the last World Cup, 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)'.
