The 72-year-old music icon is reported to have bought the property - described as a "1960's time capsule" - at 1045 Fifth Avenue with his wife Nancy Shevell, who he wed in 2011.

Describing the luxurious apartment, The New York Times once called it a "glamorous 1960's time capsule with a dash of Hollywood."

According to the New York Post newspaper, the purchasers were made to register their names as the property is for co-op buyers only, with the couple listing themselves as Paul and Nancy McCartney.

The deluxe complex - which has glamorous views across Central Park - has never been put on the property market before.

It originally belonged to property developer Manny Duell, who used to buy rented buildings and offer them to those who wanted to live with unrelated residents.

While Manny died in 1977, his wife continued to live in the residence until her death in 2014.

The $15.5 million price tag is far from the former Beatles star's family home in Liverpool, which sold at the beginning of the year for £150,000.
