'Star Trek' actress Nichelle Nichols has been taken to hospital after suffering a mild stroke.

The 82-year-old actress, who starred as communications officer Lieutenant Uhura on board the USS Enterprise in the iconic 'Star Trek' TV series from 1966 until 1969, fell ill on Wednesday evening (03.06.15) and was subsequently taken by an ambulance from her Woodland Hills home in California.

Zach McGinnis of Galactic Productions, said: "While at her home in LA, Nichelle Nichols suffered from a mild stroke.

"She is currently undergoing testing to determine how severe the stroke was.

"Please keep her in your thoughts."

During her time on 'Star Trek', the actress shared TV's first interracial kiss with co-star William Shatner, who played the part of James T. Kirk.

In addition to her appearances on the TV series, Nichelle also starred in six 'Star Trek movies', the last of which debuted in 1991.

What's more, before her on-screen career took off, Nichelle was a singer for jazz legend Duke Ellington, while she also worked for NASA, where she helped to recruit minorities and women.

The actress has one son, Kyle Johnson, and was married to Duke Mondy from 1967 until 1972.
