The 40-year-old actor has caused controversy with residents living close by to his Richmond home after he decided to put up the structure, which he is believed to have gone ahead with though he didn't get planning permission.

The local council has reportedly received a string of complaints about the new chimney, which has been described as a "truly awful blot on the landscape" by locals.

A letter penned to the council from a resident, which has been obtained by the Mail Online, reads: "This is a truly awful blot on the landscape of what has otherwise been a successful renovation of a house in an important part of Richmond.

"The chimney is an aberration and does nothing to enhance the house nor the surrounding area."

And the local society believes it is unfair for Tom to alter his £3.4 million Georgian home, and that residents have to "suffer the tasteless indignity".

Speaking about the issue, the Richmond Society said: "For an 18th Century building, in the very heart of the town, to suffer the tasteless indignity of this out of character, out of scale chrome steel chimney is beyond belief."

Tom reportedly filed a retrospective application to have the wood burning stove flue put up, which was refused by the Richmond Council.

However, the 'Legend' hunk appealed against the decision, which was accepted under the 'development rights' clause.

This is not the first alteration the 'Dunkirk' star has made amendments to his London abode, as him and his wife Charlotte Riley have previously had a side, rear and basement extension over the past four years.

And, according to property website Zoopla, Tom's home has almost doubled in price as he is rumoured to have bought the site for £2.5 million, but since he expanded the property into three-stories he has added another £1 million to its total net worth.

Tom has yet to comment on the matter surrounding his chimney.
