The cult 90s show Twin Peaks is set to return to the small screen in 2016. The beloved TV slot starred Kyle MacLachlan, Piper Laurie, Sherilyn Fenn, Joan Chen and Russ Tamblyn and its previous success has encouraged its revival on Showtime. It’s original creators David Lynch and Mark Frost are scheduled to do a nine-episode third series which will air in 2016.

The first episode was first aired in April 1990 and carried through till June 1991 and followed Dale Cooper as he tried to solve the murder of Laura Palmer, set in Twin Peaks.

There are no actors attached to the show yet, however David Nevins of Showtime has promised that it will be as "wonderful and strange" as the original.

He said: "To quote Agent Cooper, 'I have no idea where this will lead us, but I have a definite feeling it will be a place both wonderful and strange.' "

According to New York Daily News newspaper, David and Mark felt the show was "pulling them back" after the first and second series failed to answer those questions left open when the bizarre ABC show ended so soon after its release.

The pair said in a statement: "The mysterious and special world of 'Twin Peaks' is pulling us back. We're very excited. May the forest be with you."

Showtime has also announced it will air the first two seasons of the show in the run up to the long-anticipated third series' debut.
