Melissa being looked after by her mum

Melissa being looked after by her mum

Spending time with your mum can sometimes leave you a little drained, but I suppose it's easy enough to walk away from, whether your at her home, her at yours or you're both out together.

But what happens when you both work together and then mum decides to move into your home to be closer to the grandchildren? Joan and Melissa: Joan Knows Best? follows just this, when Joan Rivers moves in with her daughter.

Joan's career spans fifty years in the entertainment industry, with plenty of different accomplishments under her belt, she now hosts E! Entertainment Television;'s hit weekly series Fashion Police and covers red carpet style during awards season, it's for this show that Melissa serves as Executive Producer.

If you've ever watched the show, you know that Joan is never short of an opinion of what the celebrities are wearing, which must make it a terrifying task to get dressed each day: "Yes, it's tiring though," explains Melissa. "You're running around after your child all day and doing a million and one things, you just want to wear a pair of jeans and a vest."

But Melissa does know how to dress up properly, she tells me that Dolce and Gabbana are her go-to designers for the perfect dress: "They hardly ever need altering."

Living with her mother has been a bit of a struggle at times, which is shown hilariously through the show. Melissa explains that it should be different now that Joan is living under her roof, but insists that Joan doesn't listen to the rules she tries to enforce.

She says that Joan thinks it's perfectly fine to give Cooper, her son, ice cream just before dinner and that ofcourse Cooper loves this: "What child wouldn't love living with grandma?"

But it's run-ins with people like Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, that really show how much hassle Melissa must have to put up with. Joan had taken pictures of her whilst she was in the shower and Melissa insisted that she musn't show them to Perez when he came round to the house. Within five minutes of him being there Joan has the pictures out and you can see Melissa's blood start to boil. But what is she supposed to do, kick her own mother out?

This is the perfect show to watch if you just want to see how dysfunctional a family can be and maybe make your own seem a little 'normal'.
