This isn't uncommon. Within a month of 9/11 a friend of mine in the UK had met a "New York fire fighter" on the Net. She wanted to meet this hero and he told her to send him the plane fare to the UK. He needed the money because he hadn't been paid since all the computers in New York weren't working as a result of the attack.
Common sense prevailed in the end.
