FemaleFirst is giving you the chance to win a copy of the Ashes to Ashes Boxset

Fire up the Quattro - it’s 1981 and DCI Gene Hunt is back in an exciting sequel to hit BBC drama Life on Mars

DVD BOX-SET DEBUTS 5 MAY 2008

“Smart performances, crackles of sexual tension between Hunt and Drake, great writing, fabulous music and lashings of humour. An utter treat” - Radio Times

“A spin-off that looks to be as richly exuberant – and enjoyable – as the series that spawned it” - Sunday Telegraph

Following a gripping finale to the multi award-winning Life on Mars, unlikely heart-throb DCI Gene Hunt (Philip Glenister) is back, dropping his old Ford Cortina for an Audi Quattro, and embracing the Eighties in the acclaimed spin-off Ashes to Ashes. The DVD of the series, which is currently attracting 6.6 million viewers a week, will be released by Contender Home Entertainment on 5 May 2008.

Gene Hunt is no longer the self-styled Sheriff of Manchester. Flanked by his faithful sidekicks, Ray Carling (Dean Andrews) and Chris Skelton (Marshall Lancaster), and drawn by the action and intrigue of the London Met, Gene has turned his attentions to taking on the ‘southern nancy’ criminal scum. However, he receives the shock of his life when he’s thrown together with sexy, intelligent DI Alex Drake (Keeley Hawes). Gene is still a firm believer in old-fashioned values, where a woman’s place is in the home, and ‘real men’ shouldn’t moisturise, be sensitive, remember birthdays or put the bins out without being asked!

Single mother to daughter Molly, Alex has rapidly risen through the ranks of the Met, and in the modern world of 2008, skilfully uses psychological profiling to capture suspects. However, when Alex and her daughter are kidnapped, she makes a daring attempt at escape, resulting in a horrific accident where she is shot in the head. Alex suddenly finds herself in 1981, interacting with familiar characters not just from her own lifetime, but also from the detailed reports logged by none other than Sam Tyler, which Alex has previously spent months pouring over.

Alex is ripped from her current world of sexual equality and respect in 2008, and finds herself catapulted into the New Romantic era, with a soundtrack of Bucks Fizz and The Human League ringing in her ears. She must deal with Gene Hunt’s alpha male ego, including his brash and politically incorrect opinions about women. In his opinion, men are after a quickie before going off to the pub with their mates for a pint and a pickled egg, whereas Alex has a more modern view on relationships! However, frustrated by each other’s stubbornness, the friction between Alex and Gene heats up and it becomes apparent that there is more than just a professional tension emerging.

Will Alex’s gutsy modern attitude and specialist knowledge enable her to return home? Discover the answers with Ashes to Ashes on DVD out on 5 May 2008.
