Antonio Banderas re-enacted one of his native Spain's oddest rituals on late-night TV in America on Friday (11Sep09) when he agreed to be pelted with tomatoes.
The actor told The Tonight Show host Conan O'Brien he'd always dreamed of making the trip to Bunol, near Valencia, for annual festival La Tomatina, where 45,000 people from around the world throw 200 tons of tomatoes at each other at the end of August.

The Spaniard confessed he still has no idea why the tomato chucking takes place, adding, "They have been doing that for 60 years - they are looking for the purpose."
Confessing he watches the annual event on television, Banderas revealed he has a secret desire to be part of Bunol's messy event - and invited members of O'Brien's house band to join them for a mini tomato fight.
The actor got competitive, telling O'Brien, "I am going to make a fantastic sauce for you."
The studio became a mess of tomatoes as Banderas and his posse took on O'Brien's fruit throwers.
