Ben Stiller says his new movie isn't offensive.
'Tropic Thunder' has come under fire in America, most notably over repeated use of the word 'retard' and Robert Downey Jr.'s character darkening his skin to portray an African-American in a production, but the 'Something About Mary' star insists the film isn't deliberately trying to upset people.
He said: "My character is a star who played a mentally impaired man in a movie called 'Simple Jack' to try and win an Oscar. I was, hopefully, satirising actors who will go to great lengths to portray somebody with a disability to advance their own careers.
"I understand that people could really interpret it the wrong way. It's definitely an edgy place. But in the context of the movie, I hope it's clear that it's satire because I don't want to be offending anyone."
Ben also claimed Tom Cruise's portrayal of a studio executive was all the 'Top Gun' star's own idea.
He added to Parade.com: "I know Tom and I asked him to read the script. It was his idea to create the role of this foul-mouthed Jewish studio executive.
"It wasn't in what we had originally written. Tom said, 'You make fun of the actors in this movie. It would be funny to have a studio guy.'
