As Brad Pitt contemplates life without the mother of his six children and arguably the world's most beautiful woman, Angelina Jolie, he must wonder how he managed to find himself at the centre of such a mess.
Rewind six years. Brad was happily married to America's sweetheart Jennifer Aniston and observers were waiting with baited breath to see when the loved-up pair were going to announce they were expecting a child. Even Brad himself had hinted at the prospect, revealing: "God, I'm going to say it. Kids. Family. I'm thinking family. Yeah, I got family on the mind."
But that announcement never came. Instead the world was told in January 2005, that after four-and-half years of marriage, Brad and Jennifer had decided to end their union and were seeking a divorce.
As the planet's most famous couple, everyone wanted answers and it seemed all roads led back to the same person - a certain Angelina Jolie.
She and Brad had met in 2004 on the set of 'Mr. and Mrs. Smith' and it was clear to everyone involved in the movie, there was an instant attraction between the impossibly good-looking pair.
It wasn't just the Oscar-winning beauty Brad got on with. He also bonded with Angelina's three-year-old adopted son Maddox, and seeing the relationship Angelina had with him, made him fall for her even more.
As Brad became more and more involved with Angelina and Maddox, he seemingly drifted further away from Jen. While both had always denied anything went on while he was still married - his relationship with everyone's favourite Friend was doomed.
God, I'm going to say it. Kids. Family. I'm thinking family. Yeah, I got family on the mind.
Heartbroken Jennifer won the public's sympathy as Brad and Angelina made no effort to hide their fledging relationship. The pair were pictured on holiday together in Kenya, building sandcastles on the beach with Maddox. Then just six months after the split, Angelina adopted another child - a six-month-old baby girl named Zahara - from Ethiopia, with Brad by her side. Because they weren't married, Brad's name didn't appear on the adoption papers, but six months after she was brought to the United States, the 'Fight Club' star filed to be the legal father of both her and older brother Maddox.
So the worst-kept secret in showbiz had been revealed - Brad and Angelina were a couple. But remarkably, for a woman who had never needed the approval of anyone before, it seemed Angelina wasn't comfortable with being perceived as a husband stealer.
"I've been painted as the Wicked Witch of the West and a marriage wrecker. But all I've been to Brad is a shoulder to cry on. Half the world believes we had an affair and I'm the one to blame for his split" she has said. "The truth is I was there to help him through his pain. I would never sleep with a married man."
And it seemed Angelina - who had been married twice before and had previously admitted to drug use and cutting herself - was keen to hang on to Brad as she attempted to change her image from troubled vixen to earth mother. Shortly after the adoption of Maddox and Zahara, the couple announced they were expecting their first child biological child together.
In May 2006, Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt - perhaps the most genetically-blessed child on the planet - was born in Namibia, taking the family members up to five.
While Brad had always dreamed of being a father, it all seemed to be going a little too fast for a man who just 18-months previously had been a carefree 41 year old. As well as finding himself overwhelmed with children - especially when three-year-old Pax was adopted from Vietnam in March 2007 and added to the mix - Brad often found himself fighting with Angelina over things they both felt passionate about.
Speaking about their home life, Angelina has said: "The sparks fly at home if the nice Brad fails to see that he's wrong and reacts in a defiant way. Then I can get so angry that I tear his shirt."
