Brad Pitt has laughed off a campaign urging him to run for mayor in his adopted home of New Orleans, Louisiana, insisting politics is "not what I do best".

The Hollywood star is being courted by residents of the city to run for public office after helping to rebuild the hard-hit Lower Ninth Ward area through his Make It Right Foundation, which is providing affordable housing for families displaced by 2005's Hurricane Katrina.

Supporters have even been distributing T-shirts bearing the actor's likeness alongside the slogan 'Brad Pitt for Mayor'.

But the actor, who owns a home in the city with his partner Angelina Jolie, insists he would not make a good candidate because his policies would be too controversial.

He jokes, "Yeah, I'm running (for the office of mayor) on the gay marriage, no religion, legalisation and taxation of marijuana platform! No, I don't have a chance! It's not what I do best."
