David O Russells's new movie Silver Linings Playbook is an early Oscar contender after picking up the top prize at the Toronto International Film Festival.

The movie, starring Bradley Cooper as a man recovering from a breakdown, picked up the Blackberry People's Choice Award, following in the footsteps of Slumdog Millionaire and THE KING's Speech, which both went on to win a slew of Academy Awards, including Best Film.

The movie co-stars Jennifer Lawrence, Robert De Niro and Jacki Weaver.

Ben Affleck's latest directorial outing, Argo, was named runner-up.

Other winners at the festival included Seven Psychopaths, starring Christopher Walken and Woody Harrelson, which picked up the Midnight Madness Award, and rock film Artifact, which was named best documentary.
