Musicals are not for everyone. The mere sniff of a warble, a chorus line or an encore has many reaching for the earplugs and the exit. But 'Dreamgirls' possesses something sorely lacking with its predecessors - think 'Sound of Music' and 'Grease' - credibility.
The cast is made up of hip, young rising stars - Beyoncé Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, Jamie Foxx - and cool established names - Danny Glover, Eddie Murphy - and the story has already proven to be a huge success on the Broadway stage.
It is not only audiences that are hooked - the Motown musical movie has also got the right Hollywood tongues wagging.
The movie scooped three Golden Globe awards - for Best Musical, Best Supporting Actress for Hudson and Best Leading Actor for Murphy - and has received eight Oscar nominations.
Hudson's critical acclaim for her portrayal of singer Effie White is even more impressive when considering this is her film debut, after coming to the attention of studio bosses by competing on 'American Idol'.
'Dreamgirls' is the tale of three African-American women striving for stardom with their band the Dreamettes.
Adapted from the original 1981 Broadway show, starring Jennifer Holiday, Sheryl Lee Ralph and Loretta Devine, the film is "loosely" based on the story of 1960s hitmakers The Supremes and lead singer Diana Ross.
