Exclusive Kevin Shields- Extreme Rockclimber Interview

6 months ago 23rd May 12:52

Kevin Shields escapes from the day-to-day grind of life with his passion for rock climbing. Not unusual you may think, but the difference is, Kev only has one hand.

Female First caught up with him to find out how he has triumphed over adversity and how he is determined to push himself to the limit.......

How did you get into climbing?

When I was really young my dad started me off hill walking, which I loved. As I got older I wanted to push myself more so I progressed into rock climbing and by the time I was 22 I had moved onto ice climbing.

What has been the greatest obstacle you have had to overcome?

The ice climbing itself is a massive obstacle. The first time I did it was a bit daunting and a huge deal for me, but I persevered and now I can’t stop! Technically the ice climbing can really hurt as I am literally hitting my arm into the ice; my elbow really takes a lot of the impact!

Do you use any special equipment for climbing?

Usually I don’t use anything at all. The buzz for me comes when I climb solo, just me and the rock. The feeling of being free is fantastic. It means more to me to climb without ropes, as I think you have to really push deeper into the actual climbing. On top of that when you don’t rely on a rope you have got to be really focused on what you are doing, one wrong step and that’s it!

What achievement are you most proud of during your time climbing?

There is a route called ‘Fast and Furious’ which is climbed solo, with just ice picks. It wasn’t a long climb and it took about 5 minutes to climb, but it had a huge overhang so I was glad to get it over with quickly. You never know what might happen, rock might crumble away or you might lose your footing – there is always a big risk, and that’s why I love doing it so much! Another thing I am really proud of is competing in the 2007 Ice Climbing World Cup, I came away 52nd in the world, but asthe first ever disabled person to compete I was incredibly happy.

What are your ambitions for the future?

There is a route in the Cairngorns in North of Scotland called The Hurting which I have set my sights on completing. It has only been climbed by one other person so I think that is spurring me on! It is a difficult winter climb, mixing both rock and ice climbing but I just know when I reach the top it will be worth it. The climb goes from 10m high at the first bend, right up to 45m high so I really can’t afford to make any mistakes.

You can see Kev in action on Current TV: Sky Channel 193/Virgin Channel 155 from Friday 23rd May-Monday 26th May.
