Rock's nice guy Fran Healy

1 month ago 11th Oct 08:15

A lot has changed since a 13-year-old Fran Healy was slammed by judges at a school talent show. The youngster failed to impress with a song he had written about the headmaster called 'Mr. Mullin Blues' and was forced to return to the drawing board.

Now 35 and the frontman of hugely successful rock band Travis, Fran has put his first attempt at breaking into the music business behind him, comforted by the three BRIT awards the group has accrued over their successful career.

Born in Staffordshire, England, Francis Healy was brought up in Glasgow, Scotland where he was raised by his mother after his abusive dad was sent packing. Fran still refuses to talk to him.

After playing in a few school bands, things started to take off for the musician Neil Primrose - who was drumming for a band called Glass Onion at the time - offered him an audition.

Fran's voice and songwriting ability blew Neil away and along with Dougie Payne (bass) and Andy Dunlop (lead guitar) formed what would later become one of Britain's most beloved alternative rock outfits, Travis.

While performing as Glass Onion, the band released the Glass Onion EP. Each of the 500 copies are now valued at around £1,000 each.

In an ironic twist, Travis went on to win a talent show organised by Music in Scotland Trust, but were never given the £2,000 prize they were promised.
