Former heavyweight boxing champion Frank Bruno has credited his new girlfriend with helping him deal with his ongoing mental health issues.
The British sportsman, who battles bipolar disorder, was sectioned under Britain's Mental Health Act in April (12) and treated at a specialist psychiatric hospital.
I liked her straight away and we clicked from the start
He had met hairdresser Nina Colletta in Glasgow, Scotland two months prior to his treatment, and he is convinced it was her support that has helped him address his demons.
Bruno tells Britain's Daily Mirror, "Nina is a good girl. She has helped (me) more than she could ever realise. I need her as a rock more than she needs me. This year she has helped me get out of the tunnel and get back on my feet. "Things are going really well at the moment and I just hope they carry on like that.
We met at a friend's wedding in Glasgow.
I liked her straight away and we clicked from the start.
I met her son and he said I was allowed to take his mother out, which was important to me.
Now she is like a soulmate". Doctors now visit Bruno at his home in Bedfordshire, England every month to medicate him in a bid to keep his bipolar in check. He adds, "I am doing what the doctors say.
I am having the injections and I am doing what I am being told to do.
Being sectioned is not nice.
I went to a very, very horrible place.
It was like being in hell.
I don't want to go back".
