Actor John Stamos has George Clooney to thank for his stint on hit TV medical drama E.R. because the original castmember was the guy who encouraged his pal to sign up.

Stamos, who plays Dr. Tony Gates in E.R., admits Clooney told him to take the part.

I haven't told many people this. I wasn't at lunch with him (Clooney), but we were sitting and he said, 'You should go and do E.R.' He was the one who told me to go on ER.

The TV star says, "I haven't told many people this. I wasn't at lunch with him (Clooney), but we were sitting and he said, 'You should go and do E.R.' He was the one who told me to go on ER."

And Stamos will forever be grateful - because he has learned so much on the show: "I think I've learned more on this show than I have in my 25 years of being in the business. It's been a real honour to be on this show."
