Girls Aloud: Reality royalty

5 months ago 24th Nov 08:15

Girls Aloud's catchy tunes have dominated the airwaves since they won reality show 'Popstars: The Rivals' in 2002, but it is these tunes combined with their looks and personality that have made them the most popular girl group in the UK.

Outspoken, intelligent and gorgeous, the group - made up of Sarah Harding, Cheryl Cole, Nadine Coyle, Kimberley Walsh and Nicola Roberts - are emulated by young girls, envied by women and lusted after by men nationwide, but they haven't let the popularity go to their heads.

Still refreshingly down-to-earth despite one of their members marrying a Premiership footballer (Cheryl) and one dating a world-famous TV actor (Nadine), the girls will soon be releasing their fourth studio album, 'Tangled Up', and will embark on their third Arena tour in May 2008.

But what is it that makes it OK for men, politicians, women and children of all shapes and sizes to like the band without being mocked by friends, as they possibly would have been if they admitted liking girl groups such as the Spice Girls and Bananarama?

Despite competing with reunited bands from the nineties including the Spice Girls and All Saints, Girls Aloud are wiping the floor with their competition - and were recently given the accolade of Most Consecutive Top Entries in the UK by a Female Group in the Guinness Book of World Records when they got their 16th top 10 hit - beating the Spice Girls by six entries, and Destiny's Child by five.

Virtually unrecognisable from their days as tracksuit-wearing wannabes, the glammed-up girls have always maintained their independence - choosing to deal with the band's business issues themselves rather than through their former manager, Louis Walsh.

"We'd ring up the record company direct and say, 'Oh we don't like this song, can we come in for a meeting about that?" Kimberly laughed. "But it's worked out for the best because we learned a hell of a lot in those first two, three years. A lot of bands these days, even the indie bands, are quite sheltered from the management side of it all."
