Personal information about stars including Matt Damon and supermodel Gisele Bundchen's husband, American footballer Tom Brady, have been illegally accessed by police in Massachusetts.

An internal audit has revealed that questionable criminal background checks were performed numerous times on Boston area celebrities including Damon, Brady, singer James Taylor and basketball player Paul Pierce.

Information accessed varied from driver's licence photos and home addresses to whether the stars had purchased guns, reports the Boston Globe newspaper.

Authorities have now launched an investigation into the matter.
