Gore Verbinski will not be returning to the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise.

The filmmaker who helmed the first three movies, creating a surprise franchise, has told producer Jerry Bruckheimer he doesn't want to film a fourth movie as he is working on the adaptation of the video game BioShock.

However Johnny Depp with be returning to the character of Captain Jack Sparrow but original cast members Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom.

In an interview with Variety Verbinski said: "I had a fantastic time bringing Pirates to life, and I am eternally grateful to Jerry, Johnny [Depp] and the rest of the creative and production team. I'm looking forward to all of us crossing paths again in the future."

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl became one of the most successful films of 2003 grossing almost $654 million worldwide.

The film gave birth to one of the biggest cinema icons of the last decade Captain Jack Sparrow as well as delivering two sequels, both of which appear in the top five biggest grossing movies of all time.
