James Gandolfini landed a role in a new Broadway play after "begging" producers to cast him.

The multiple Emmy and Golden Globe award-winning actor fell in love with God of Carnage during a performance in London, and approached producers backstage with a copy of his resume.

He confesses, "I enquired as to whether they were moving it (to New York). They said they were and I begged to be in it, and they said, 'Ok you can do it.'"

Gandolfini will star alongside Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis and Marcia Gay Harden in the play, about two warring couples, which kicks off its New York run next Month (Mar09).

Gandolfini is best known for his role as Tony Soprano, a crime boss who tries to balance his Mafia career and his family life, in hit television show The Sopranos.

Away from the theatre 2009 looks set to be a busy year for the actor with no fewer than four releases; In the Loop, Where the Wild Things Are, The Taking of Pelham 1 2 3 and Welcome to the Rileys.
