Marianne Faithfull's McCartney sorrow

30-04-2007 14:00

Marianne Faithfull has expressed sympathy for friend Sir Paul McCartney over his bitter divorce battle.

The 60s folk singer - who once dated Rolling Stone rocker Mick Jagger and socialised with The Beatles - described Paul's acrimonious split from Heather Mills as a "mess".

She told Britain's Daily Express newspaper: "Oh, he's going through such a terrible time. It's hard to imagine how he got himself into his current mess."

Faithfull, 60, believes Paul began romancing Heather in 1999 because he was missing first wife Linda, who had died the year before.

She added: "He wasn't used to sleeping alone. He missed Linda. Poor Paul."

Paul, 64, is reportedly desperate to put his divorce battle behind him by going back on tour.

He was forced to abandon the European leg of his world tour last year because of marital problems.
