Hairspray: The sequel

2 months ago 25th Sep 13:30

A sequel to hit musical movie remake 'Hairspray' is being planned.

Queen Latifah revealed she has been approached to reprise her role of Motormouth Maybelle in a sequel to the 2007 big-budget all-singing, all-dancing extravaganza.

She said: "I got an e-mail from people connected to the last movie. It said, 'Keep your ears peeled."

Based on John Waters' 1988 classic, the 2007 movie starred Nicky Blonsky as overweight teenager Tracy Turnblad who is desperate to appear on 'The Corny Collins Show' as a dancer and attract the attention of heartthrob Link Larkin, played by 'High School Musical' star Zac Efron. She finally lands the spot she wants, but soon encounters problems from programme bosses, who want her off the show. John Travolta donned drag to play Tracy's overbearing mother, Edna.

Director/choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman are all expected to return for the sequel, rumoured to be scheduled for release in 2010.
