Although she "loved" her character, Rumer is not ashamed to admit she is jealous of some of her co-stars.
"I actually went in for Jessica, who is the real b***h, and Leah Pipes who played Jessica went in for Ellie," Rumer said. "I would love to play a character like that and really go for it.
"After they called me and they said, 'I think we want you to play this character instead'. I saw Leah do her version of Jessica I was like, 'You know what? I'm really glad I didn't get that part.' She was great for that part.
"But I was a little jealous. I'm hiding in a closet the whole time, crying. There's not really a whole lot of action going on with Ellie."
Despite this, Rumer threw everything she had into the role, even attending voice training sessions and watching classic horror films to perfect her cries of terror.
She said: "I really had no idea I could scream that loud but the vocal training definitely helped. By the end of the movie, the sound guys weren't so happy with me. You definitely lose your voice a bit but I like screaming but it's really fun.
"I researched some good screamers. I watched 'Scream' and a couple of those other ones before we started shooting. Neve Campbell has some pretty good ones in 'Scream'. You just try to pick up different ones so you keep changing it up. It was a lot of work".
To Rumer, the hard work and strained vocal chords are worth it if she can connect with just one teenager.
She's still just 21 years old, but Rumer dreams of becoming a positive role model for other young women who don't fit into the size zero, blonde-haired, blue-eyed stereotype.
She explained: "One of the most important things that I would love to do if I get to continue doing this job is to be a really positive role model for young women about their body image and about eating.
"I think that in general the idea of perfection that has developed in Hollywood is wrong. There needs to be a shift in that. I have two younger sisters in high school and they talk about image all the time.
"Girls need to have a better body image. The stars out there now, they don't need to be stick-skinny to the point you can see their bones through your skin. You don't need to be like that to be beautiful or perfect or to fit in. What you are is exactly what you should be."
'Sorority Row' will be released in Britain on September 9.
