The couple began dating in 2007, several months after Ryan's engagement to musician Alanis Morissette was called off.
In May last year Ryan and Scarlett announced they were engaged, with Scarlett showing off her $30,000 diamond engagement ring at the Met Costume Ball Gala in New York.
Ryan has since claimed he proposed to his love via text message, revealing: "The hardest part was to compress all of that love, all of that joy into just one text message. And then it was just hitting send."
In August last year, Scarlett claimed she and Ryan were in no hurry to tie the knot, insisting that at 23 - she is now 24 - she was too young to think about walking down the aisle.
"We're just enjoying our time. We are just recently - very recently - engaged. So we are just taking it easy. And there is no big plan yet," she explained. "I mean, I'm 23. There is no reason to rush into it. Everything feels very natural and relaxed."
So, the showbiz world was amazed when the couple married in secret just one month later.
The pair wed in an intimate ceremony in a remote resort near Vancouver, Canada, and Scarlett has since admitted she was thrilled they managed to keep the union under wraps.
"It was my mission to have a moment of privacy, to do something for myself. I was happy with the results of that," she explained.
Reports claims there were just 40 guests at the ceremony, while Ryan was so relaxed about the nuptials he went salmon fishing in the hours before they took place.
The pair have remained tight-lipped about their relationship, revealing only snippets of their intimate lives.
Among the glimpses Scarlett has given is the revelation that they never discuss their acting roles with each other.
She revealed: "We don't have a lot of work talk around the house. We both prefer to just be ourselves at home. There's no competition between us - we just don't talk about it."
While the pair seem blissfully happy together they continually have to fend off questions about when they might start a family.
Although they are yet to reveal when they become parents, it has been claimed Scarlett is keen to be a young mother, while Ryan recently suggested they may give a home to a disadvantaged youngster before having biological children.
"My oldest brother is adopted and I have every intention of adopting at some time,' he explained. "I'm very grateful for having my brother in my life. I couldn't be more pro-adoption. There are plenty of kids in the world that need it."
While Ryan is keen to keep most aspects of his private life under wraps, there is one area he has been vocal about.
His dad Jim suffers from Parkinson's Disease - a disorder of the central nervous system which affects the sufferer's speech, motor skills and other functions - and last year Ryan decided to run the New York marathon in honour of him.
"I am not a runner. I am a running joke. Waking up at 4.30am and jogging anywhere from 11 to 23 miles has been nothing short of horrifying," he explained.
"But this is on behalf of my father, Jim Reynolds, who has spent the last 15 years in a life or death struggle with Parkinson's Disease."
Ryan ran as part of Team Fox, set up by Michael J. Fox, to raise money for Parkinson's Disease, which the 'Back To The Future' actor suffers from.
He completed the gruelling race in an impressive three hours 50 minutes, calling in an "incredible experience".
So, what's next for Ryan? After starring in arguably the most successful romantic comedy of the year in 'The Proposal', no-one would criticise him for taking a break.
But that's not this actor's style. Instead he will be appearing in thriller 'Buried', about US contractor Paul Conroy who is attacked while working in Iraq. He awakes to find himself buried inside a coffin, with just a lighter and a cell phone to aid his escape.
Ryan is also set to star in 'The Green Lantern', which sees Hal Jordan given otherworldly powers when he is handed a magic ring.
Married to one of the most beautiful women in the world and regularly lauded for his good looks - he was named one of People magazine's sexiest men in the world last year - and acting ability, it would be easy to hate Ryan Reynolds. But with his self-depreciating sense of honour and dedication to good causes, it's actually much simpler to congratulate him on a job well done and look forward to seeing him on a big screen again soon.
