Surrogacy In The City - page 2

And if it had been a natural pregnancy, there was no guarantee Sarah Jessica would have got the daughter she so desperately wanted.

She has previously spoken of her desire to have a girl and she gives the impression her life wouldn't be complete if she didn't have a daughter to dress up.

Speaking soon after James' birth, she said: "I have 'The Boy' and now I want 'The Girl' as soon as possible. I've been saving all my things for her. Everything - crazy Judith Leiber handbags, Manolos - every single pair."

Although Sarah Jessica and Matthew are currently playing happy families, their marriage was recently rocked by allegations the 47-year-old actor had an affair with a 25-year-old New York woman.

Broderick never denied the claims and the couple were said to be on the verge of divorce - something that has led many to question whether they are suited to raising two new babies.

It wouldn't be the first time a couple has had a 'band-aid baby' in a bid to paper over the cracks in their relationship and it certainly won't be the last. But will the strain of having two newborns push the Parker-Broderick marriage over the edge?

Sarah Jessica has previously admitted their relationship can be quite volatile, confessing: "I'm really lucky that he is the father of my son, but that doesn't mean that we always agree on everything. We've had some rather treacherous train rides. I'm happy to be with him regardless, but I'm sure there are many times he wishes he wasn't with me."

The couple had already put themselves under enormous pressure to conceive again - apparently enduring several unsuccessful bouts of IVF - and the strain nearly put an end to their 12-year union.

"Sarah Jessica said it very nearly killed their marriage," a pal revealed, "the longer they tried and failed, the more frustrated they grew."

But while the debate rages about whether the couple should be allowed to buy their dream family, others have come out in support of their decision.

Sarah Jessica is a private person and would never be seen doing an 'at home' spread with her family or revealing the most intimate details of her life.

As a result, no one really knows how long they tried for a baby or the pain they endured when each attempt failed.

While Sarah Jessica and Matthew's situation would almost certainly provoke sympathy if it happened to anyone else it seems that because they are famous, everyone feels the need to criticise what they're doing.

Yes, you can argue they already have a healthy and happy child and should feel blessed to have him, but Sarah Jessica wanted to add to her family. How can anyone complain about this simple dream?

Almost all women would want to conceive their baby in the natural way, but for some, it is not possible.

Thousands of couples turn to surrogate women each year. Sarah Jessica and Matthew are no different.

Of course, they are fabulously wealthy so can afford the $150,000 bill, but every couple who opts for surrogacy has to pay - even if it's just to cover medical expenses.

Sarah Jessica and Matthew would have thought long and hard about engaging the services of a surrogate.

They would have been warned about all dangers and the emotional pain that is endured when you watch another woman carry and give birth to your baby.

One friend said: "After a lot of unsuccessful tries, they came to the conclusion a surrogate was the best alternative.

"Sarah Jessica checked out several other candidates - she even looked within her own family - but really felt she could trust this woman."

Sarah Jessica and Matthew have weathered many storms before and seem to be ready to ride this one out.

There may be cynics sniping at their lifestyle decisions, but it is their choice to make and if everyone involved in the situation is happy, that is surely the only thing that matters.

Once they take their twin daughters home to James later in the summer, they'll feel their lives are complete and won't worry how they did or how much it cost to make their dreams come true.
