Surrogacy In The City

This summer, Sarah Jessica Parker will finally have her life-long ambition realised. At the age of 44, she will become the mother of the twin girls she has always craved.

But the 'Sex and the City' star will not have to endure the stress and strain of pregnancy or the pain of child birth, as the actress and her husband Matthew Broderick have paid an unnamed woman to carry their beloved babies for them.

The couple announced they were expecting twins last week, with their representative confirming: "They are happily anticipating the birth of their twin daughters later this summer with the generous help of a surrogate. The entire family is overjoyed."

Friends say Sarah Jessica and Matthew - who have a six-year-old son, James - finally feel that their family will be complete.

"She always wanted a girl and now they are having two, so it's a dream come true," a pal revealed, "Sarah Jessica realises it was her last chance at having children and feels totally blessed."

They're over the moon and excited as any prospective parents would be. Their life is about to get a lot busier and they just can't wait.

But while the pair can't stop talking about their new babies, they have refused to comment on the details of the surrogacy.

Latest reports claim the couple's surrogate mother is 26-year-old tattooed, bisexual rocker Michelle Ross who has previously had a baby for a gay couple as well as having a four-year-old son of her own.

The identity of the surrogate is not the only mystery - it is also not known whether the unborn twins were conceived using Matthew's sperm and the surrogate's eggs, or if one of Sarah Jessica's fertilised eggs was implanted in the surrogate's womb.

Medically, the latter seems an unlikely possibility. At 44, Sarah Jessica is fast approaching menopause and infertility. According to one British fertility clinic, a 45-year-old woman has less than a three per cent chance of conceiving.

Whatever the genetic parentage of the twins, there is no doubt the girls will be loved.

The friend said: "They're over the moon and excited as any prospective parents would be. Their life is about to get a lot busier and they just can't wait."

But as the Parker-Broderick family gets its fairytale ending, they face criticism from those who feel Sarah Jessica is buying her dream babies without the burden of carrying them for nine months.

Although she endured pregnancy and labour with son James, the actress' career has taken on a new direction since his 2002 arrival.

She recently signed up to star in the 'Sex and the City' movie sequel and with filming due to start later this year as well as having three other films in pre-production, it wouldn't have been the ideal time for her to get pregnant and recover from giving birth.

Although there are rumours her 'Sex and the City' character Carrie Bradshaw will get pregnant, the star's own pregnancy would have interrupted filming.

One critic argued: "Maybe she realised the option of having someone else carry her babies was going to be less harmful for her career and pregnancy than actually having the babies herself."
