Scarlett Johansson's language problem

3 months ago 12th Aug 13:30

Scarlett Johansson didn't understand her co-stars in some scenes of 'Vicky Cristina Barcelona'.

The 'Match Point' actress stars with Spanish-speaking Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem in the film and admitted that, because director Woody Allen encourages improvisation, she was unsure what was being said during a scene where they argued in Spanish in front of her.

She said: "I didn't really know what they were saying. I didn't really want to know.

"I could understand a couple of the words they were saying and I was like, 'Ooh, that sounds bad' but it was not really that important. I think certainly my character was kind of in a similar situation as I was, which is like, kind of pick up a couple words, but it's just like that's part of her."

Scarlett - who has worked with the director on two other movies, 'Match Point' and 'Scoop' - says her co-stars came to her for advice on the script before shooting began.

She explained: "Every single actor that worked on this, before our first day, came up to me and they said 'How married to the dialogue is Woody, is he precious about it?'

"Especially Penelope and Javier. I think they were a little worried about it because it's so nuanced and I said, 'No, you'll see'. I felt like the old shoe but his writing's so brilliant that you want to keep it."
