Sir Elton John was forced to wear an unusually plain outfit at his recent Aids charity event in New York City because he accidentally left his favourite sparkly suit in Los Angeles.

The Rocket Man hitmaker was devastated when he realised his ornate rhinestone jacket had been left behind at his home in California after he travelled to the Big Apple for his Elton John Aids Foundation benefit in Manhattan on Monday night.

The flamboyant star called his housekeeper and asked her to find the "rhinestone jacket in the cupboard and mail it straight away," but the request was misheard and he later received a message saying, "There is no jacket designed by Ryan Stone in the cupboard," according to New York Post gossip column Page Six.

Sir Elton was forced to wear a plain black suit instead and offered his "sartorial apologies" to guests at the gala after recalling the story of his lost jacket.
