The Dark Knight has swept aside all competition as it stormed to the top of the box office grossing over $11m in it's opening weekend.
The film sees Christian Bale reprise his role as the caped crusader and Christopher Nolan returns as the director after the success of the 2005 picture Batman Begins.
But the film has sped it's way through the $300 million mark in just ten days and looks set to overtake Iron Man as the biggest financial hit of 2008.
The Dark Knight has gained more interest and momentum after the death of actor Heath Ledger, who died of an overdose in January, who takes on the role of the Joker.
Elsewhere Mamma Mia, which has held onto the top spot for two week slipped to number two but still grossed over £2 million.
Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging was another new entry at number four while Will Smith's new film Hancock rounded off the top five.
The only other new entry was Baby Mama which entered the chart at number ten.

The Dark Knight rules, absolutely. Non comparison to any movie before, brilliant!
